2007 Part A & B Conference
National Government Services held a one of a kind educational adventure with the first ever combined Part A and B Provider Conference this year on August 21 - 23, 2007, at the Hyatt Regency Louisville, Kentucky.
The 2007 Part A&B Provider Conference (formerly known as the “Open House” for Part A providers, and the ”Main Event” for Part B providers) allowed every participant the opportunity to customize their learning experience by choosing from a wide variety of sessions that were offered over the three-day period.

Keynote Speaker Dr. Susan Nedza, MD, MBA, FACEP Click here to watch the overview video
Dr. Nedza is the Chief Medical Officer, Region V of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services in the Chicago office. The region serves the states of Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. She is currently leading the quality improvement efforts for the Regional Office. |

Fraud and Abuse Click here to watch the overview video
One estimate states that fraud and abuse cost Medicare and Medicaid about $33 billion each year. The United States Attorney’s office for the Western District of Kentucky is committed to fighting health care fraud in Kentucky. Part of that commitment involves prevention efforts by educating healthcare providers and beneficiaries about fraudulent and false healthcare schemes. Some of the topics that were covered by Bill Campbell in the Medicare Fraud and Abuse session include: kickbacks for patient referrals, billing for services not provided, inflating invoices to Medicare to obtain more money than is allowed, misrepresenting services, supplies and procedures provided, providing medically unnecessary services for financial gain, and more. |

The Provider Outreach and Clinical Education Department presented an overview of chiropractic services. The 60 minute Chiropractic session covered common denials, medical necessity of treatment, Medicare coverage, modifiers, and documentation tips. |

National Correct Coding Initiative Click here to watch the overview video
The National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI)/Medically Unlikely Edits (MUE) session provided updates to the National Correct Coding Initiative Edits and Policy Manual, including rationale for the NCCI edits, appropriate uses of the modifier 59, appeal/refinement process, and a summary of most recent edits added and rationale for them. The session also included the development and implementation process for the MUE (units of service), the basic criteria for the MUE, the effect of modifiers related to MUE, and the appeal/refinement process. |
